Ethernet Interfaces:
Introduction
This Technical Note describes the range of Ethernet modules designed for the products: FIBCOM 6310
Edge Node, FIBCOM 6320 Edge Node and FIBCOM 6340 Switch Node. It contains information on
physical interfaces on the modules, mapping structure of the Ethernet traffic into the SDH and switching
capabilities.

Ethernet Features:
Gigabit Ethernet, ETEX1/ETEX2
The ETEX1 and ETEX2 modules are designed for FIBCOM 6340 Switch Node, Feature Pack 2.0. The
ETEX1 module contains one physical Gigabit Ethernet interface, the ETEX2 modules is provided with
two such interfaces.
The ETEX modules are available with either 1000Base-SX or 1000Base-LX interfaces. As a rule of thumb
an SX laser can reach a distance of at least 300 meters over a multi mode fibre. Using a LX laser along with
a single mode fibre the distance increases to approximately 5 km.
The Ethernet traffic is mapped into one VC-4 as a point-to-point connection in the network. It is possible
to adjust the allowed MAC bandwidth in steps of 50 Mbit/s. Each interface has a buffering capacity of
16 kbit. The Ethernet MAC frames are mapped into SDH using the GFP (Generic Framing Procedure) as
standardised in ITU-T Rec. G.7041.
Performance data is collected and calculated on the physical Ethernet interface, the MAC frames and for GFP.
One single FIBCOM 6340 Switch can support up to 16 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces in just two sub-racks.
Fast Ethernet, ETEX4:
For FIBCOM 6310 Edge Node and FIBCOM 6320 Edge Node, Feature Pack 4.10, and Feature Pack 2.1 of
FIBCOM 6340 Switch Node a module with four Fast Ethernet interfaces is available.
The Fast Ethernet interfaces are electrical of the type: 10/100Base-T. For transmission over a single twisted
pair it is possible to reach a distance of at least 80 meter.
Traffic between ETEX4 modules in a network is set up as point-to-point connections. The bandwidth of
the Ethernet MAC signals between the interfaces is selectable in steps of 2 Mbit/s up to a maximum
bandwidth of 10 Mbit/s. 1 to 5 VC-12 containers are virtual concatenated. PAUSE frames are used for
flow control. Also LCAS (Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme) is supported.
LCAS makes it possible to use protection routes in the SDH network for Ethernet traffic. When a route
fails it will not disrupt the traffic, the link bandwidth just drop to haft of the normal bandwidth.
The Ethernet MAC frames are mapped into SDH using the GFP (Generic Framing Procedure) as
standardised in ITU-T Rec. G.7041.
The performance is measured on basis of the individual VC-12 containers.
The FIBCOM 6310 Edge Node can be equipped with four Fast Ethernet interfaces, for FIBCOM 6320 Edge
Node the upper limit is 24 interfaces, and in a FIBCOM 6340 Switch Node it is possible to mount up to 96
Fast Ethernet interfaces in four sub-racks.
